UL Announces New Program To Speed up LED Luminaire Certification
UL, a global safety science leader, announced today the introduction of the Type TL Program, which offers a set of certification guidelines designed to create a more efficient path for manufacturers in developing new LED luminaire products. Through the flexibility of the UL Recognized Component program, LED drivers, an electrical device which regulates power to an LED or string of LEDs, are often designed with varying constructions and are tested in a variety of ways. This approach helps ensure LED drivers are interchangeable in most cases without the need for additional testing.

Universal Display Purchases Fujifilm’s Worldwide OLED Patent Portfolio for $105 Million
Universal Display Corporation, the leading OLED patent licensor and supplier of materials and technologies for energy-efficient OLED displays and lighting, and FUJIFILM Corporation, announced today that Fujifilm has sold and Universal Display has purchased the entire worldwide patent portfolio of more than 1,200 OLED patents and patent applications of Fujifilm for $105 million.

Wacker and Technische Universität München Extend Partnership in Silicon Chemistry
Wacker Chemie AG and Technische Universität München (TUM) are extending their existing partnership in silicon chemistry for another six years. They signed an agreement to this effect. The Munich-based chemical Group is sponsoring the Institute of Silicon Chemistry, located on the research campus in Garching near Munich, with a total of up to Eur 2.5 million. This will finance doctoral positions and the associated material resources. WACKER and the TUM founded the Institute of Silicon Chemistry in 2006. Over recent years, more than 30 research projects have been conducted, which have resulted in ten patents and 35 scientific publications.

Zhaga's Debut at Light+Building 2012 - Zhaga Members Show the first Zhaga-Compliant, Interchangeable LED Modules
The international lighting industry has so far lacked clear guidelines to ensure the interchangeability of LED modules made by different manufacturers. With Zhaga that is now changing. Since its foundation in February 2010, the consortium has developed specifications for LED module interfaces. These interfaces enable easy LED module integration into luminaire designs and reduce overall system design cost. At Light+Building 2012, from 15 to 20 April in Frankfurt am Main, Zhaga will present to the lighting community what has been achieved so far and the goals for the near future.

Aledia Makes Its First LEDs on 8-Inch Silicon Wafers Using Cost-Disruptive Microwire Technology
Aledia, a developer of LEDs based on disruptive microwire GaN-on-Silicon technology, announced today that it has made its first LEDs on 8-inch (200mm) silicon wafers. The cost of Aledia’s LED 3D chips based on microwires is expected to be four times less than traditional planar (2D) LEDs. Additionally, Aledia announced its first-round financing totalling €10 million (approximately $13M) with leading US and European investors, which was closed in 2012.
